This was a trimuph
I'm making a note here:
Huge success
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction

Guess what I just played? Seriously though, why did nobody tell me I needed to play this game? I blame all of you. Best. Game. Ever. (Well, no, but it's up there.) Very short, but very awesome. Anyone know of a good map pack for it?

Aperture Science
We do what we must because
we can
For the good of all of us
except those who are are dead

Read Bonk, which I've heard good things about from just about everyone. I didn't like it. I feel like it was written very tongue-in-cheek, like she was saying "haha, look at how silly this research is" and "can you believe people actually did this?" Almost conspiratorially, where she was encouraging the readers to laugh with her at some of the silly science that people did. I don't think that's fair at all though, and I was more interested in what the science was. Like that "Psych of Sex" class at Rochester. Learning the hows and whys was great. Laughing along at the whats was less so.

Look at me still talking
when there is science to do
When I look up there
It makes me glad I'm not you
I've experiments to run
There is research to be done
On the people who are still alive

Next to read is "You: The owner's manual". I think I'm due for an oil change sometime soon. Maybe have some belts tightened, or some lug nuts.... uh, what is it one does to lug nuts, exactly? Turn them? That sounds painful, actually, so let's forget that one.

12:53 am, Apr 19th - Suckered into a meme
List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now, shaping your spring. Post these instructions in your LJ along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they're listening.

1. Fall With Me -- Paul Van Dyk w/ David Byrne
2. Standing -- VNV Nation
3. Superstar -- Lupe Fiasco w/ Matthew Santos
4. Tiny Apocolypse -- David Byrne
5. Eye of the Storm -- The Cruxshadows
6. Perpetuum Mobile -- Penguin Cafe Orchestra
7. Halcyon & On & On -- Orbital (to be fair, this song has been my favorite song ever for the last 14 years, so it's shaped every season I've had for a majority of my life.)

I defy you, meme. I shall not tag people for this. Free will and free will alone shall dictate their responses. Perhaps they will, and perhaps not. Perhaps they will merely to choose better songs than I have, and establish their place in the hierarchy of things. We shall see, oh meme. We shall see.

7:22 pm, Mar 27th - Hiya
So.

Err, it's been a while since I've posted anything here. I'm a biiiiig slacker. Can't promise I'll be back for very long, either. But who knows, maybe it'll call to me like it used to.

What's new in my life? I'm glad you asked.
Still working for the defense folks. Still playing with networks. I bask in the radioactive glow of all my monitors at work; I expect to glow in the dark in a few months, and this tumor is coming along nicely. They've decided they love me there, and keep saying nice things about me. It's a strange, small world. I've run into a bunch of old Air Force folks, including someone I went to tech school with!

Back in school. Going well, if slowly. I might get a degree eventually. Who knows?

Still dating Treyvadi. That's going well. We might be moving in together at some point soonish. That sort of makes me nervous, but I'm easily spooked. Been over a year now; most of my friends at work think that's quite long enough and we should be getting on with the marrying now. I'm not quite at that point, but she does make me very happy. =)

Still playing lots of video games. FFXI will always be my one true love, but Treyvadi plays Wow, so I switched to that to play with her. Man, looking back on some of my FFXI entries makes me cringe. It took me over two years to hit max level there. I've been Wow'ing for less than half that time, and I have one character at max level and two more within ten levels. Wackyness. (To be fair, it took me _far_ less time to get my 2nd job to 75 in FFXI, so the time issue is probably less of an issue than I'm making it out to be.)

I need to get to the city more often. I don't see my old friends nearly often enough, and miss you guys dearly.

And that's about it. My cat, Natasha, is still alive and well. She says "Mow" and "Gmoo" to you all.

2:38 pm, Apr 11th - Too damn awesome not to share
This is probably NSFW (Not Safe For Work), since it's basically a chick pole dancing in a t-shirt and underwear. But, that said, it's not really sexy as much as it is just awesome. It's kind of the Cirque du Soliel of pole dancing. (Also, note the excellent music.)

9:11 pm, Feb 2nd - Short version
Here's the short version:
Last Sunday morning, I got into a bad car accident.

I'm fine, the other driver is at fault (he ran a red light), and my Air Force combat-trained reflexes allowed me to slow down just enough so that I hit him, rather than the other way around. I jest about the reflexes, all I had time to see was a blur moving at me in a manner I strongly disapproved of. My insurance is handling the legal details, I have a rental car for now (A Jeep Liberty. It's kind of fun, in the way I imagine a monster truck is fun). My work was very nice about the whole thing, and I'm grateful for it.

My insurance hasn't looked at my car yet (or if they have, they haven't told me), but I'm fairly certain it's totalled. I went by the tow yard and rescued my personal belongings, amidst serious thoughts of my own mortality. When I say "fairly certain it's totalled," I mean that the front end is almost completely gone. The radiator is further to the side than the wheels are. Amusingly, the headlight managed to live through the process and dangles in defiance of the impact. Still, looking at it now, I'm kind of surprised I walked away from it with everything intact.

Please skip the "zomg, I'm glad you're okay" -- for some reason, being reminded of the fact that I could've been seriously hurt makes me upset and cranky, and bite people's heads off. It always has, and I always feel really bad afterwards. So with that said, if you want more details, ask me about it in person. Hugs are fine too.

I'm mainly posting this to ask for advice. What type of car should I get next? (I feel grim saying it, but this was a quick and simple way to finally convince myself it was time for a new car.) I really liked that Civic, and wouldn't mind getting another one. I've thought about upgrading to an Accord, but the loss of mpg makes that a tough decision. People have suggested a Toyota Camry, or a Mazda 6. A coworker of mine has a VW Passat he might be willing to sell, too. Thoughts on these cars, or similarly flavored cars? I do like Honda, but I'm not wedded to them in any way. My priorities are safety, fuel economy, and a wee bit of luxury on top. (Variable delay intermittent wipers good, sunroof bad. CD/MP3 player good, alloy rims useless.) Finding the best of those and then comparing against price will steer my decision, I suspect.

Unfortunately, this means I won't make it to NYC this weekend for a party. Send my regrets and love on to those that do show up.

9:46 pm, Jan 23rd - Attention dust
I have found your god, and I have killed it. Unfortunately, this did not restore my computer to life.

So, my desktop died. The timing is amazing, since I recently got two other computers up and fully operational, but still makes me very sad. I want to save it, so I'm hoping someone who reads this will be able to help.

Warning, computer geek ramblings follow )

In the meantime, I have my little linux box and my sexy laptop to keep me company. Despite that, I may cry. Am I a bad person for feeling as bad/worse as when I lost my cat? .....don't answer that.

10:28 am, Dec 18th - Update to the update
Beat Deathgaze. Apparently he only uses Renew if you disengage. So, when he casts Reverse, accept that you're healing him and keep hitting him. His Reverse drops quickly, and then you can go back to wailing on him.

Just a couple of hunts left, then I need to finish off the espers. And possibly try to get those last few Concurrances too.

11:41 pm, Dec 17th - Update
Someone seems to have made a mistake. Someone in the Air Force. Money is involved. I'm just confused.

I won another Airman of the year thing. Apparently either my squadron thought I was just that damn cool in the first three months of the year (much of which was spent out-processing, and thus not at work), or somebody else did and put my name in for this thing. It's a non-official group of people with related AFSCs (AF specialities), so they can give monetary awards. This is kind of silly, since people not in the AF can't win AF goodies. (This is part of why they were annoyed at my choice of timing to get out of the AF.)

Alternatively, and I think equally likely, is they made a typo on last year's form. So I actually won last year, but they saw 2006, and held it until now. I'll have to call people and find out.

Completely unrelated to that, I won Employee of the Month at my new job. Whee. For my professionalism and good-natured attitude. Which is amusing, because about 30 seconds before the office chief walked in to hand me the award, I had been leaping out of my chair calling everyone communists, bastards, and a host of other bad names. =D

FFXI is going well. PLD has capped exp, and I just play it when people need tanks for things. I'll always be a PLD at heart though, so I still lot on tank-flavored loot. Got Summoner to 66, which means I can use the first few hardcore avatar attacks, and I'm getting to the point where I'll need to start lotting on SMN-flavored loot too (but only after I've gotten everything for my Paladin in those areas).

FFXII is not going well. I can't kill Deathgaze >.< The sob uses a Paling (Phys Immune) to start the fight, so I abuse him with magic for a bit. Then he drops the Paling, and I screw him up but good. (Vaan as tank, with Sword & Shield, Heavy armor, and Cat-ear hat; Fran as support/DD with Zodiac spear & Light armor; Panelo as healer.) Once he gets to his last ten thousand hp, he casts Reverse on himself, which makes damage heal him. He follows by putting up a Magic Barrier (Mag Immune), so my Curajas don't hurt him. Then, he casts some magic on me, says lolpwn, let's the Magic Barrier drop when Reverse wears off, and casts Renew (full cure) on himself. He does this over and over again, like a punk. I lasted through three iterations of this, then said fuck it. I can't quite time the Quickenings right to get in that kill shot. The guide says to cast Reverse on him first, then Renew, and Scourge or Bio for the finisher. So it should take about 4 seconds to kill him. But I don't have Renew yet. And he has a chance to resist Reverse, which I found out when I tried casting it on him as he Renewed himself. What a fucker.
Other than him, I'm up to the Bahamut, so right about the end of the game. Some day I'll break down and just go beat it without finishing the Concurrences or the last few hunts.

Thanks to [info]corneredangel for the heads up about FFT:Lion War. I must now go out and buy a PSP, due to the fact that this game will one day exist on it's sweet sweet hardware.

6:57 pm, Nov 9th - Wow
Been forever since I updated this. I'm a slacker. =P

So, my office is mostly former/retired military. This means that the political makeup of my office is fairly easy to read. Except for the one dumb girl who is a vehement, loudly outspoken liberal, but votes Republican. She's just.... well, confusing is one word. Plus, I work in VA, which is a rather conservative state. (Not always Republican, but always conservative.)
Wednesday started off trepidatious -- they had seen some election results the night before, but mostly unverified. As the day went on, they got angrier/more subdued. Some started saying how "it is better to have opposing parties in the White House and in Congress. It means......{trail off}". Some just started cursing, insisting voter fraud had occured, and demanding recounts. For my part, I was too busy laughing at them to notice much of the election results.
I find that with each passing election, I become more and more convinced that the rest of the world just doesn't care about the things I care about. The candidates in my state made big deals over issues I find trite. They ignored issues I would consider to be fairly important. (Like "are you going to have sex with underage people in office (again)?") Perhaps there are rules about bringing up things like that on Meet the Press and debates and such, but when people talk about the candidates they rarely mention it -- and even the most vitriolic of non-endorsed political ads don't go into it.

Virginia voted in favor of a law to define marriage as one man, one woman. I asked some people about that, curious why they had voted yes to that proposal. They said "The bible had Adam & Eve, not Adam & Steve". I sort of got in trouble, I responded by asking them why they had voted yes to that proposal, this time without the stupid-sounding slogan. They.... didn't really like being asked that. Ah well.

Interesting stuff. People are strange.

In other news, a friend of mine is selling tea. Many of you already know this, having spoken to her as/more recently as I have. But for those of you that haven't, take heed. It's staggeringly good tea. Celestial Seasonings my ass, this is excellent tea. You can choose from a variety of tea types, and you can even create your own blend. She also sells glasses, teapots, tea strainers, tea bags for loose tea... any tea accoutrement you could ask for. Go check out her site -- http://www.theshadedleaf.com/ If you're interested, I can get you the hookup for a discount.

FFXI is still awesome. Been working on Summoner lately. Got to level 61, now the real grinding begins. They recently changed the job a bit so I can main heal and still have my avatars out to tear shit up. I do so love the tearing. The jobs they added in the latest expansion pack are a lot of fun too, but I'm trying to focus on one job at a time.
FFXII is pretty awesome too. Amazing graphics, nice battle system, amusing and interesting plot, and oddly, continuity with previous FF games (Tactics & Tactics:Advance). There's a Wedge & Biggs, of course (although their names have been scrambled), but they did an amazing job at keeping the feel of Ivalice the same. You get jobs from taverns, the taverns look the same (albeit much much prettier), you report completion of jobs (sidequests) to people and rank up both in overall standing and in your clan. About the only thing missing is someone in your party saying "I opened it with faith....." or "With me around, this job is easy!"

And now, I go back to lurking.

Hmm. Been far too long since I posted here. I really should post something real, but instead all you get is a good idea:

It's a Firefox plugin that will encrypt webmails. It works with Gmail, Yahoo, and Hotmail, I think. It's still in Beta so you technically have to request an invitation, but I registered and got my greeting email in about 30 seconds, so it's not exactly hard.

Now..... as weird as it is to say it bedtime for me. Yes, at 8pm. *sigh*

Oh, I'm trying to buy a sofa. I checked out some stuff at Ikea, but any other ideas would be great. Also, drapes to darken my bedroom.

8:21 am, Aug 10th - Birthday n' stuff
Thank you all for the birthday wishes -- especially the voice mails; it was fun getting off of work at 6 the morning after my birthday and listening to a bunch of you wish me a happy birthday. =) Cheered me up for the ride home. Had a quiet birthday, as usual. Chatted a bunch with family and friends, and then went to work. Got a letter from my company's president wishing me a happy birthday. I couldn't decide if that was sweet or stalkerish. Well, not stalkerish, but perhaps "annoyingly uncaring and a sign I'm a corporate drone". *shrug*
This past weekend my team threw a little birthday party in the office for me. Cake and ice cream for all. It was suprising, since I didn't think that they liked me enough to do something like that.

Work itself goes well. I am a corporate monkey, but I'm a well-paid corporate monkey who enjoys his job. I suppose my biggest problem is that my toys are too big. I'm god, and get to see everything, but I don't get to micro-manage and build/change things. Well, I can change things, but as it turns out, even god has to coordinate all changes made to router configurations with a couple of different offices. We have _stuff_ coming up, so they're moving me back to days. (Yes, it's important enough to warrant underscores.) Which is nice, I guess. I'll certainly be more in-tune with the rest of the world. But definitely more painful, sleep-wise. The thought of staying up all night until 8am doesn't bother me at all. The thought of waking up at 4am? Ick. *twitch*

Still haven't seen Clerks II. I really need to, and soon, since I also should see World Trade Center when it comes out, and I have a very strict "one movie per whenever-I-get-off-my-ass-and-go-outside" rule. Which basically means one movie every other month. I have nothing against outside, its just that there are people there. Other people. Whom I haven't met and already dislike.

My cat, Natasha, has gotten fat. So I put her on a strict feeding schedule. She's lost weight, but demands food like babies demand dropkicking. She's very sweet and greets me at the door with purrs and loving rubs when I get home from work, and then escorts me to her food bowl. If I veer off to do something else first, she starts lecturing me and nudging me until I feed her. Then she gets sweet again, and mews happily at me. (I'm serious about the lecturing, she has a clearly distinct meow for it, and it sounds like some of my old teachers when they were angry.) Once, she lecture-mewed at me when I wasn't paying attention to the time, and I fed her early. Now, she tries to trick me into feeding her early almost every day the same way. When it doesn't work, she hmphs at me and wanders away. It's really cute, I admit.

Oh, speaking of anthropomorphizing, anyone else disturbed by those Yaris ads? They're sort of beyond anthropomorphizing. The car emulates things that are obviously not human, which I don't think I've seen in a car ad before. For some reason, I find it very bizarre. The osmosis bit at the end never fails to creep me out. Stupid cars.

Anyway, time for sleep.

I wear glasses or contact lenses. I love to play video games. × I've tried marijuana.
I've watched porn movies. × I have been the psycho-ex in a past relationship.  (Some of my ex'es might disagree) I believe honesty is usually the best policy.
I curse sometimes. × I have changed a lot mentally over the last year. × I carry my knife/razor everywhere with me.

2:31 pm, May 9th - Birthday wishes
[info]sunkist12, Happy birthday!

Went to base today to try and con the AF into moving my stuff for me. They'll move me home for free, but since where I want to move is closer than home, I think they'll do it. We'll see. Also had to turn in grades for the semester. Met up with some folks from my shop for lunch. Good times. They confirmed that yes, I'm technically a Sergeant now. Hahahahahaha. However, the orders didn't actually get executed, so I'm not allowed to go to MPF and request a new ID card that says I'm a SSGT. Ah well. (I was totally going to. Even though it would only be valid for 4 days, it'd be worth it.)
I confess, I'm actually somewhat surprised it's real. Every time I call base now, I identify myself as Sergeant Beckler, expecting the person answering the phone to burst into laughter. But, they take it seriously -- they were all told that I was promoted -- and now I see why. Strange.

Went clothes shopping with [info]treyvadi. Got a bunch of clothes to wear for work, which was very odd. I guess I've gotten used to the idea of wearing a uniform every day. I fully expect to wake up on my first day of work, glance into my closet, and panic. Should be fun.

Anyway, off to continue my wanderings.

Hrm. What else is going on in my life? Start my new job in a few weeks. Looking into moving to NOVA or someplace on the MD VA border, NWish of DC. It'll make what is now a pretty brutal commute much less taxing.

Not sure if I posted this here or not, but I finally hit level 75 (maximum level) in FFXI. Now I'm working on Summoner, or I might go work on White Mage next. (SMN currently 15, WHM currently 50.) The new expansion is lots of fun. Assault and Besieged in particular. They did a really good job with them, I think. I also recently made a lot of money (two big money drops in Dynamis), so I'm starting to acquire some of the gear I've lusted after for the past 60 levels. Finally got some nice sky drops too -- Crimson boots abjuration and Koenig Hands abjuration. Whee. =)

I'll be in the city this weekend (don't ask which city, you all know that there's only one I consider _the_ city). So city folks, what's going on? I'll be busy Friday evening, but the rest of the time I should be free. And, since I've been on a quasi-day schedule recently, I'll won't cringe if someone suggests brunch at the ungodly hour of 10 or 11am.
